The Make UK rankings
This year’s annual Manufacturing – The Facts report by Make UK had some interesting findings.
For one thing, despite a whole raft of challenges facing UK Manufacturing, from economic uncertainty to ageing workforces, it’s good news for the sector!
The UK remains comfortably in the top 10 of the largest manufacturing countries globally by value of output. In fact, we’ve stepped up from ninth place in 2021 to eighth, thanks to our output having jumped significantly to £224 billion.
The new rankings have put us above France for only the third time since 2002. At the top of the list, China sits head and shoulders above runners-up the USA and Japan.
Can the UK keep climbing?
There is definitely scope for the UK to continue on its upward trajectory.
According to Make UK, if the sector realises its potential, it could soon catch up to Italy’s, currently seventh in the rankings.
Calls for the Government to commit to a GDP target of 15% for Manufacturing could make this a reality. Estimates suggest that this could boost the UK economy by £142 billion.
Additional findings on the UK Manufacturing sector also point to a positive future:
- The sector contributes a GVA of £224 billion.
- The industry accounts for 49% of all UK exports.
- the industry accounts for 16% of UK business investment.
- In the UK, 2.6 million people are employed by the Manufacturing sector.
The role of the North West
The success of Manufacturing in the UK is largely down to a particular region. The North West is the UK’s largest manufacturing area, and has been far several years now.
In the North West, Manufacturing is worth £28.2 billion in output. This accounts for almost 15% of the area’s total economic output.
And, not only that, but it’s also responsible for 8% of regional employment, and 8.2% of total manufacturing employment in the UK.
With 314,000 people employed in Manufacturing within the North West, it’s worth asking yourself whether you have access to the best talent for your business…
